 Physical Education

Overview

At Wollescote, children participate in well-structured lessons with a pure link to the national curriculum outcomes and Ofsted framework. The long-term plan confirms that children have plenty of opportunity in learning a variety of sports in different scenarios and a clear progression throughout the year groups.

The skill progression is clearly identified on the whole school progression map, lessons have been planned to incorporate these skills and aims, also children are given an incentive by receiving certificates after completing their topics.

Our medium-term plans have a clear breakdown of the topic, short-term plans are very detailed with a step by step method, challenges incorporated in every lesson to show independent learning and are universal to deliver to the children.

In EYFS, the focus is to help the children’s all round development through physical activity. The focus is to increase the amount of gross and fine motor experiences the children are exposed to. This will primarily be through Forest School activities. Children in Reception will also have a 1 hour weekly session of P.E. taught by their teachers using the YST ’Start to Move’ document.

In KS1, the development of Fundamental Movement skills (FMS) is essential to achieving proficiency in various sports, games and dance movements. Children should feel confident and competent performing the skill and be given plenty of time to practice FMS through isolation movements within skilled games. Children should explore a vast amount of equipment in a variety of ways.

In LKS2, Sports specific skills (SSS), still working on isolation but also combining skills together. Developing sportsmanship and leadership, learning basic rules and tactics. Upskilling movement patterns with fluency, control and emotion.

In UKS2, a greater knowledge of tactics and rules and learning the specific sport at primary level (modified) to compete in inter/intra competitions. Showing consistency, timing, strength and  power in their movement patterns. Confident to lead a team and to be able to show quality sportsmanship.

At Wollescote, it is our intention to develop a lifelong love and passion for physical education, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA) in all young people.
